Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Huntington Beach is a new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in Huntington Beach, Orange County, CA. We provide Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs, developed by the Gracie Barra Association — the number one Jiu-Jitsu team in the world.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, commonly referred to as the ‘Gentle Art.’ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the perfect martial art for anyone who wants to learn how to defend themselves, learn a new skill and get in better shape.

Our school is ran by Professor Otavio Sousa, a world-class Jiu-Jitsu competitor, winning 6 Jiu-Jitsu World Championships and 1 No-Gi Black Belt World Championship, among a large number of other accomplishments. Learn more about Professor Otavio Sousa.

Our Instructor:  Professor Otavio Sousa

Otavio is known among his students for his incredible technique, his careful breakdown of every move, for his individual attention to each and every student, his eagerness to answer students questions, and and for teaching everything he knows–never holding anything back from students.

Whether you want to learn about self-defense or what techniques really work at the highest levels of Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu competition (including his legendary outside-hook guard, “steamrolling” guard passing, and suffocating top-control), you will not find a better instructor.

brazilian jiu-jitsu  He has been practicing the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since November 1999, always representing Gracie Barra, originally from Recife, Brazil. Otavio is a Black Belt second Degree under Professor Ze Radiola, who is a black belt under Master Carlos GRACIE Jr.

Otavio’s first experience teaching was in 2006 in England when he spent 10 months teaching at Gracie Barra Birmingham with his teammate and friend Braulio Estima. After that, he went back to his hometown in Recife, Brazil where he continued teaching at Gracie Barra PE, Brazil with his professor Ze Radiola until the end of 2009 when he got an invitation from the Gracie Barra Association to work here in California for them.

When working for Gracie Barra Anaheim Hills:

“Professor Otavio is a Teacher through our Orange County Schools. He started training when he was 13 years old in Pernambuco Recife. His friendly personality and energy for BJJ inspires many people along with his full dedication to teach students the same knowledge he was taught through the past years.

As a competitor he has achieved many titles in the World Championship, Pan-American Championship, Brazilian Championship, South American Championship, No Gi World Championship and European Championship.

He will continue to compete and accomplish many more titles. Teaching is a goal achieved by the Professor, he will be teaching every student how to live the BJJ lifestyle and also enjoy it as much as he enjoys it himself.”

What Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Means to Me

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the most important thing in my life. I’ve learned that there is no better thing to do, or work, with what you like and I love BJJ. It was through BJJ that I met a lot of people, made good friends, and had the chance to visit some very nice places and visited other cultures. Not to mention that Jiu jitsu changes lives. It gave me a lot of confidence and discipline.

Favorite Quote: “Your belief determines your actions, and your actions determine your results, but first you have to believe”.

Learn the Heritage of Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie Barra

It is difficult to say precisely at what point in time or where exactly Jiu-Jitsu originated. Despite the efforts of many historians and evidence pointing to Buddhist monks in India, basic elements of grappling can be traced back to places like Greece, India, China, Rome, and even Native America.gbheritage

When trying to understand the ultimate source of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, one must avoid the simplification of attributing its creation to a person, group, or period in time. Jiu-Jitsu, as we understand it today, is a natural and intuitive way of fighting that has rudimentary manifestations in various cultures in different historic moments.

But a martial art is comprised of more than just techniques or fighting strategies. The philosophy that defines the purpose of practice, and the moral code of the practitioners, is a powerful element that determines not only the direction of technical development, but the survival or death of the art itself.

We invite you learn more about the Heritage of Jiu-Jitsu and our founder, Carlos Gracie here.
